Eating Healthy on a Cruise

Taking the time to eat healthy everyday at home can sometimes even been a challenge, but with all the choices and unlimited dinning options you have on a cruise it can be even more difficult!

Yes you have a buffet, with plenty of fruits, nuts, and veggies, but be ware... its easy to over eat nuts calorie dense nuts, sugar filled dried fruit and oil drenched veggies. Buffets are all you can eat, but you don't want to just chow down without thinking, stick to portion sizes that you

would at home or else you mind your suitcase isn't the only thing thats heavier after disembarking. Below are a couple "recipes" or concoctions of foods I made while on the cruise!

TIP: Don't be afraid to ask for what you want, the cruise staff is really accommodating if you have dietary restrictions and if something isn't out at the buffet, they might just be able to run down to the kitchen to get it.

TIP Bring some digestive enzymes, eating foods you aren't used to or that have extra oil can sometimes make it more difficult for the body to digest, bring some digestive enzymes to help ward off indigestion issues.

TIP: Bring your own Himalayan sea salt, so you don't have to use table salt, its well worth it! Nobody wants the extra bloat from that everyday table salt.

Breakfast Sail Mix

- 4 dried fig halves

-palm sized portion of walnuts

- sprinkle of cinnamon

Protein Bomb

- 3 little white fish squares

- scoop of red onions

- 5 slices tomatoes

-salt and pepper to taste

Eggs Always

- 2 hardboiled eggs

-4 tomato slices

- handful of walnuts

- salt and pepper

Simple Snack

- 1 apple cut

- cinnamon and a little salt

or

All the veggies you can find with some olive oil to help those fat soluble vitamins get absorbed

TIP: Bring your favorite protein shake for breakfast or bring some of your favorite snack bars and other meal ingredients

Now when dealing with all other meals besides breakfast and snacks, I recommend room service. My cruise had a selection of salmon with a side of veggies as a meal and I probably ordered that at least 10 times while on the cruise. It was always yummy and they always listened to me when I told them to fill it up with veggies. The salmon originally had a side of fries but all it took was a little asking to get my abundance of veggies.

SO ASK IF YOU WANT SOMETHING! The staff was great and where usually more than willing to get me the exact food I wanted!

Other than ordering room service you can go to the cafeteria and come up with a meal but I would say avoid the meats, as they are probably not hormone or anti biotic free. Small fish species are a good choice for protein as are beans and lentils. I at least prefer to take my chances with non organic veg and fruit than meats.

TIP Bring as much food as you can on board from your stops. To avoid having to eat the cruise food bring your leftovers or something healthy you thing you'll enjoy later!
